What is HIC Steel? What is HIC Resistant Steel Plate? Steels for Sour Service
HIC Resistant Steel Plate is used by boiler makers and fabricators when Hydrogen Induced Cracking is a big risk.
HIC (Hydrogen Induced Cracking) is the result of a corrosive reaction between carbon steel and hydrogen sulphide. Wet hydrogen sulphide (H2S) cracking in steel has been a problem in petroleum refining and upstream oil and gas processing since the 1950s. Working conditions where wet H2S prevails are often described as sour service conditions and the term sour gas can be also be used in this context. As more fields rich in H2S are exploited, and this is increasingly the case, the problem is increasingly significant for equipment fabricated in potentially sensitive carbon-manganese (C-Mn) steels, HIC resistant steel is manufactured via the electric arc furnace with desulphurisation, dephosphorisation, ladle refining and vacuum degassing to provide an ultra clean and homogeneous steel. HIC steel is particularly suited for pressure equipment where wet H2S corrosion can be a problem.

HIC (Hydrogen Induced Crack) Resistant Steel Plates is widely demanded in the market for its ultra clean and homogeneous attributes. This steel plate is tested to exhibit the plates elasticity to the long term effects of hydrogen induced cracking. By using HIC steel plates, losses in mechanical properties can be barred and consistency ensured. HIC resistant steel plates are particularly required for critical purposes such as pressure vessels deployed by oil and gas firms. Testing / Documentation / Identification:
- Ultrasonic testing is performed in accordance with ASTM A578 level C.
- Impact tested at – 50 Deg C (Longitudinal)
- Supply Condition: Normalised
- Hardness tested according to NACE MR 0175 22HRC max
- Mill test certificates in accordance to EN10204 3.1, unless otherwise stated
- Marking on HIC plates is carried out according to ASTM/ASME A/SA 20
Thicknesses of 6mm to 100mm. Full profiling facilities are also available. Pre-allocated rolling schedules for HIC steel are available for project based contracts. Maximum HIC plate weight 15 tonnes.
Steel in contact with water containing H2S will corrode producing hydrogen at its surface. H2S not only inhibits the formation of hydrogen gas, so reducing the opportunity for it to escape, but promotes its absorption in to the steel. At typical working temperatures below 200 degrees Celsius hydrogen atoms can become trapped causing embrittlement and ultimately cracking.
The use of steel pressure vessels in industries such as oil and gas processing requires a robust steel which is resilient to the long term corrosive effects of hydrogen sulphide in sour service applications. In order to provide better H2S resistance the properties of C-Mn steels have been progressively developed to improve chemistry, cleanliness, homogeneity, and microstructure
HIC steel plate, manufactured by Essar Steel, and supplied from stock by Radisson Impex ( ISO Certified ) represents the pinnacle of that development with the use of an electric arc furnace, ladle refining, and vacuum degassing producing a homogenous, ultra clean steel suitable for use in sour service applications.
The most common grades of HIC resistant steel plate is A516 â€“ to ASME/ASTM standards. It will generally be certified to grades 60, 65 and 70 so one plate can meet the requirements for any of the three grades A516 60/65/70 + HIC.
Once the A516 plate is produced a sample is then tested to see if it meets the required of TM0284, with is the NACE standard for the Evaluation of Pipeline and Pressure Vessel Steels for Resistance to Hydrogen-Induced Cracking, using one of two test solutions. In simplistic terms these are acidic solutions that mimic the corrosive effects of the conditions that induce HIC Cracking. The steel stays in the solution for a few days and then it is examined under a microscope and the cracks that have formed are recorded

Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) in the Oil and Gas Industry
Particularly common to the Oil and Gas Industry where the use of steel pressure vessels is widespread, the risk of this should be considered when hydrogen sulphide partial pressure becomes greater than 3.5mbar. Carbon steel pressure vessels should not be affected by HIC damage where H2S levels are lower than this figure in a normal service life cycle. HIC is prevalent in wet H2S environments, which is often known as sour service and such cracking over a prolonged period of time without inspection, will reach a critical point and the steel component i.e. pressure vessel, could easily fail.Simply put, hydrogen induced cracking damage increases as the level of hydrogen sulphide increases.
Stress-Orientated Hydrogen Induced Cracking (SOHIC)
Susceptibility to hydrogen blistering and hydrogen induced cracking can be apportioned to the quality of the steel plate used. Another type of hydrogen corrosion, Stress-Orientated Hydrogen Induced Cracking (SOCHIC), is normally found in the base metal adjacent to the weld, where the stress point is highest due to the internal pressure of the vessel and the stress on the weld point itself. HIC and SOCHIC can also be found in steel pipework. This represents a major problem for the oil and gas industry - it is no coincidence that many facilities employ dedicated corrosion engineers who rigorously inspect pressure vessels for signs of wear and corrosion. Test for Hydrogen Induced Cracking
In essence, HIC testing is actually an evaluation of the steel for susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement. The test procedure involves the evaluation of resistance of pressure vessel steel plate and pipework steels to hydrogen reduced cracking caused by hydrogen absorption from aqueous sulfide corrosion. An unstressed steel sample is exposed to a solution at ambient temperature and pressure and after a designated period, the sample is removed and assessed.

HIC Resistant Steel Plate PackingHIC Resistant Steel Plate is sleeved into plastic bag individually, pieces wrapped with water-proof material, bundled with nylon rope. Clear labels are tagged on the outside of the package for easy identification of the quantity and product I.D. Great care is taken during operation and transportation.
